THAMES VALLEY CHAPTER WORKS TO
CONSERVE STREAMS AND IMPROVE LOCAL FISHING
Thames Valley Chapter works on stream improvement projects and helps the State DEP by float stocking local streams. The following projects are a few of many that have been supported by our chapter:
An aging fishladder on Latimer Brook was brought up to date with a new headwall and other new concrete structures. A fish trap was designed and installed in 2005.
The walkway over the spillway of the dam was condemned and removed in 2004. We are working with the Connecticut Forest & Park Association to obtain funds to replace the walkway with a prefab bridge. Construction will likely take place in 2006.
Approximately 305 feet of streambank had eroded causing collapse of the bank and degradation of instream and riparian resources. The Chapter assisted the DEP in restoring riparian vegetation by providing and planting woody vegetation to restore overhead shading and root base. For more information go to this web site:http://www.dep.state.ct.us/burnatr/fishing/stories/merrick.htm
The above are examples of how our chapter continues to get involved in making the environment a better place.
The Chapter can always use an additional pair of hands on projects like these. Call anyone on the Board of Directors to volunteer or bring a new project to their attention.
To learn more about our activities please read our Strategic Plan and Annual Plan, both of which are Adobe pdf files.
