Thames Valley TU Annual Campout & Breakfast
June 5&6, 2015
About 25 members and guests took part in our annual camp-out and breakfast outing on 5&6 June at the Salt Rock State Park "Coyote Run" group camping site. The fishing was good during the day and evening... with George "Midge Master" DeGray landing about 15 trout at the Midnight Pool. Those who camped out Friday night were treated to hot dogs and smores.
Saturday following a hardy breakfast prepared by Jenn Miner & the Preston clan, nine contestants tried their luck (and skill) in the Fly Casting Contest. Novice fly casters were allowed to use their natural casting hand but experienced had to use their opposite hand while casting. As you can see by the photos it was a photo finish event. Duke Preston edged out Ray Schaefer and Alton Blodgett for the grand prize (LL Bean 3 WT fly rod outfit).... but all competitors went away with other prizes and all received a note card set created and donated by Charley McCaughtry. Duke gave his grand prize to least experienced novice Tristen Tuttle who had just learned to cast that day.
The top angler for Saturday was George Jacobi who managed to net about 8 trout in the morning. All in all another great annual event.

Farmington River Trip & Pig Roast - 13 June 2015
Six Thames Valley members and guest attended the Farmington River and pig roast co-sponsored by the Mianus and Candlewood Valley chapters on June 13th. They had a great turn out of over 70 members and guests. We gathered at Whittemore Grove mid-morning for some fishing and around noon were treated to an outstanding & delicious pig roast catered by Hog Wild BBQ. After trying to win some great raffle prizes, we tried our luck fishing a section by the campground further down river. If you weren't there you missed an excellent, fun event. Mianus has several trips lined up for the rest of the year. The August trip to the Housatonic fishing for smallmouth and the brats & beer fest after comes highly recommend. Check out their website for details. CT Family Fishing Day - 9 May 2015, Gay City State Park, Hebron, CT

The hatches were sparse but we managed to bring a few to the net. Duke manned the grill and Jenn offered up some of her famous macaroni salad. George "Midge Master" DeGray took us to school by netting a dozen trout. |
