Shetucket's Last Stocking of Atlantic Salmon This Season
The Fisheries Division wrapped up stocking these awesome Atlantic salmon on Monday, DEC 20th in the Shetucket River. A team of volunteers from Thames Valley Trout Unlimited and members of Phil Sheffield's Facebook group “CT Catch and Release Fly Fishing” assisted the DEEP with stocking. Approximately 66 3+ year old broodstock Atlantic salmon were stocked. Participating volunteers were: Allen Platt, Charley McCaughtry, Chris Zucker, Cody Francis, Dave Knightly, Don Avery, Gary Lussier, Harold Thompson, Gerry Beacroft, Jim Valuckus, Joe Zade, Justin Hohn, Mark Lewchik, Paul Liberty, Phil Sheffield, Rich Walton, Rick Romagna, and Rob Wade. |

Broodstock Atlantic Salmon Stocked November 23rd
On a frosty autumn morning the Shetucket River Atlantic Salmon Management area was stocked with 2-year-old plus fish (average weight 2- 5 lbs) in Sprague thanks to the efforts of the CT Fisheries Brian Eltz & crew and the following volunteers and TVTU members: Phil Sheffield, Ray Schaefer, John Jascot, Don Avery, Rick Romagna, Jim Valuckus, Gene Cyr, Mike Carl, Patrick Hayden, David Knightly, Cody Francis, Marc Cardwell, Harold Thompson, Allan Platt, and Gary Lussier. We started with some hot coffee & donuts, some catching up with people we haven't seen in a while due to COVID, a short history by Phil Sheffield of how TVTU spearheaded the establishment of this unique fishery years ago, and a spey casting demonstration just before the actual stocking began. This was the third salmon stocking of the year. Reminder that this fishery is “Catch and Release” only until 12/15 with the use of a single fly or an artificial lure with a single free swinging hook required to fish. A Trout & salmon stamp is required to fish the designated “Atlantic Salmon Management” Areas. Salmon Stocking Shetucket River December 3rd

After a year of not stocking with the DEEP due to COVID, TVTU volunteers helped the DEEP Fisheries crew stock 300 Atlantic salmon in the Shetucket River. Fish were stocked at various spots along the Shetucket River. See the slide show! |

Last Stocking of the Year
DEC 20th CT Fisheries and TVTU stocked 42 large (3+ years old) Atlantic salmon into the Shetucket River. River flows are still a bit high, but are dropping fast. This was the last stocking for the Shetucket River this fall/winter. In all, 460 salmon were stocked into the river since early October. Thank you to the Thames Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited & CT Fisheries for assisting with stocking this very chilly morning! You may now use flies or a lure that has a single free-swinging hook. December 11, Shetucket Salmon Stocking Update
The Shetucket River in Sprague was stocked with large Broodstock Atlantic Salmon (average weight was 10 lbs. with the largest fish being around 15 lbs.) thanks to the efforts of the CT Fisheries and the following TVTU volunteers: Phil Sheffield, Tim Pindell. Morgan McGinley,Glenn Levasseur, Sam Orr, Ray Schaefer, Don Avery, Rick Romagna, Charley McCaughtrey, Jim Valuckus, and Gary Lussier. This was the last salmon stocking of the year. A reminder that the daily creel limit is now one (1) salmon per day. Please note this area has specific regulations for this fishery. Most notably, fishing is limited to the use of a single fly or artificial lure with a single free swinging hook (no treble hooks). Details are on page 28 of the 2018 Angler's Guide. Also, a Trout and Salmon Stamp is required to Fish in this area. Good Luck! |
October 9th - Atlantic Salmon Stocked
A team of Trout Unlimited volunteers assisted the DEEP with stocking the Shetucket River today. Approximately 250 salmon were stocked. Participating were: Rick Romagna, Sam Orr, Bruce Danielson, Don Avery, Gene Cyr, Ray Schaeffer, John Preston, Tim Pindell, George DeGray, Morgan McGinley, Ron Bettez, Jim Valuckus and Gary Lussier. The fishery is currently CATCH AND RELEASE only until December 1, 2018. The designated Broodstock Area on the Shetucket River is from the Scotland Dam downstream to the Occum Dam (Norwich). Please note this area has specific regulations for this fishery. Most notably, fishing is limited to the use of a single fly or artificial lure with a single free swinging hook (no treble hooks). Details on page 28 of the 2018 Angler's Guide. Also a Trout and Salmon Stamp is required to Fish in this area. |

The Last Stocking of the Spring - Shetucket River May 25th
We had a great turn out of volunteers for the last stocking of the Spring season at our home river... the Shetucket. The water is still running high so we were not able to float stock it. There should be some good fishing just in time for our annual camp-out and breakfast next weekend. See you all there!

Natchaug River Stocking -May 22nd
TVTU 282 met the DEEP Fisheries crew on May 22nd to assist with the stocking of the Natchaug River. This was one of the last stockings for this season and approximately 1000 trout were stocked.

Moosup River Stocking May 3, 2018
Led by Stocking Coordinator Gary Lussier, TVTU 282 met the DEEP stocking crew at the Quinebaug Hatchery at 7:30 AM on May 3rd. Members there to help out were Don Avery, Bruce Danielson, Ray Schafer. Sam Orr, Paul Hill, Tim Pindell and Rick Romagna. Water levels were a little high and fast but we managed a good day of float stocking. Contact Gary Lussier if you would like to get involved with stocking. It's a great time on the water and you can become familiar with some great fishing spots. |
Yantic River Stocking - June 2, 2018
On Wednesday, 5/2 volunteers Ron Bettez, John Preston, Mike Lake, and Stocking Coordinator Gary Lussier met with the DEEP crew at 8:30 at Rte 2, Exit 23 commuter lot to head out and stock the Yantic River. After a slow start due to water & weather conditions the stocking volunteers have been quite busy lately because the weather has been great and the flows are starting to get normal. Contact Gary Lussier if you would like to get involved with stocking. It's a great time on the water and you can become familiar with some great fishing spots. First Stocking of the Season - Natchaug River, April 27, 2018
After many stocking cancellations due to weather & high water TVTU volunteers completed our first stocking of the year with the DEEP Stocking crew. Unfortunately due to high water we were not able to float stock. As you can see there were some very impressive sized trout place in the river. Volunteers were: Glenn Levasseur, Tim Pindell, Ron Bettez , John Preston, Bruce Danielson, Don Avery , Charley McCaughtry, and Stocking Coordinator Gary Lussier. Broodstock Atlantic Salmon & Trout Stocking for the Shetucket River - 12 OCT 2017
On less than a day's notice several TVTU volunteers assisted DEEP in distributing Salmon and Rainbow trout into the Shetucket River. Yantic River Stocking Nov 7, 2017
TVTU took part in the last Eastern CT Trout stocking of the year at the Yantic TMA. There may be one more Broodstock Atlantic Salmon stocking for the Shetucket though. Thames Valley Chapter volunteers, Rick Romagna, Ray Schaefer and the "Prez" assist DEEP with the stocking of very "healthy" Rainbows into the Yantic (350) and Shetucket (550) rivers. Salmon Fry Stocking Monday, 20 April
Thames Valley TU, Salmon River Watershed and DEEP volunteers stocked Dickenson Creek and the Jeremy River in the Colchester area. The rendezvous location was the Comstock Covered Bridge, upstream of Rt.16 in Colchester at 10:30 am. Each bucket contained over 2000 fry. We were scheduled to do two more days of stocking but heavy rains later in the day prevented this due to swollen streams overnight. Kudos to the many volunteers that answered the call on very short notice! They were Eugene Cyr, Tom Kolasa, Michael Carl, Stephen Gerling, Irv Stanley, Paul Rice, John Manfred, Rick Romagna , Dale Williams Jr., Chris Predmore, John Smith, Michael Pintero, John Preston and Charley McCaughtry. Salmon Stocking Shetucket River - October 2014
Many of our local waters were stocked with trout
recently and the Shetucket River also received 274 Atlantic Broodstock
Salmon on October 7th. Due to the low flows stocking had been delayed, but with the recent
rains the streams have rebounded and stocking was possible. We had a tremendous turn out for the salmon stocking... Thank You All.
Volunteers from Thames Valley TU also helped DEEP Inland Fisheries stock trout in the Natchaug and Yantic Rivers on Thursday Oct 9th and the Shetucket River on Oct 10th. The Natchaug River received 1,000 Brown trout throughout the river and 600 rainbows in the trout park. The Yantic River TMA received 350 brown trout and the Shetucket River was stocked with 550 brown trout. In addition, the Willimantic TMA was stocked in a few locations. |
